How to Increase Water Pressure for Washing Machine

If there is one appliance that the majority of us just couldn’t manage without is the Washing Machine.

And If you have just purchased your brand new washing machine the last thing you want is your machine taking way too long just to fill the water in.

Low water pressure can be annoying to deal with especially when your washing machine is taking longer than expected just to fill up.

So how do you deal with it, perhaps we can help you with that…

Read along to find out what you can do in order to speed things up a little bit.

How Does Low Pressure of Water Affect the Washing Machine?

Low Pressure of Water Affect the Washing Machine

There could be a ton of reasons as to why your machine is taking too long to fill up. But before we get into that let’s understand how low water pressure affects your machine.

These days washing machines are more sophisticated than they used to be and most of them are controlled by software built into Printed Circuit Boards or PCBs.

Generally, the washing machines wash cycle is regulated just like a computer. So when reaching the fill section, instead of shutting off, the program checks whether the adequate water level is reached or not.

In the event, the water level is not reached the determined level within a time limit the program times out.

Meaning it triggers some sort of error code and stops the washing cycle. There are multiple reasons for setting a fixed time limit and it is a good thing.

It helps to avert some problems such as overheating or flooding. Assume that a washing machine is trying to fill a drum that has a hole inside it.

However, the water is constantly flooding out of the hole to the floors — if this case is left unattended then there could be a lot of problems and mess to deal with.

Therefore, if the machine has a timer, it will time out after 2 to 3 minutes considering that the water level inside the drum is not rising. This is arguably a very reliable and desirable solution.

How to Improve Water Pressure for Your Washing Machine?

Did you get a problem with water pressure right? Perhaps you have not given it much of a thought but good pressure is important and here are some ways that you can follow to make sure that your washing machine is filling up quickly.

Check Your Water Pressure

Check Your Water Pressure

You are going all crazy thinking that your water pressure is poor but is it really?

Ask your neighbours about the water supply, maybe you are not alone in the boat. And the problem is more likely in your city’s municipal water system.

Whatever the case be, you will have to make sure that your water pressure is really low and to do that there are many possible ways.

But here are two simple ways to know about your water pressure.

The simplest one is to check the pressure with a timer and one-litre jug.

First, make sure that all the appliances that consume water are turned off such as washing machines, showers, dishwashers, etc along with all the taps and faucets are off.

If you have family members home, make sure that no one is using water while you are performing this check.

Next, turn on the kitchen tap at its full power and place the one-litre jug below the tap. Ensure that you are turning on the timer at the same time when you turn on the tap, you can call someone to help you turn on the timer.

Generally, it should take around 7 to 8 seconds to fill the jug with water. If it takes more than that then you’ve got low water pressure.

The other way is to use a test gauge and connect it with your tap to measure the pressure. According to experts, the pressure should be around 50 to 70 pounds per square inch (or PSI).

Keep checking the pressure of your water as for some days it might be lower.

Clear Clog

Clear Clog

If you happen to have an old water system then it is completely normal that the pipes have clogged up.

Clogging occurs when the minerals from the water get disposed of on the insides of the water pipes.

This clogging up of the pipe decreases the diameter of the pipes and hinders the flow of water and reduces the pressure. So if your washing machine is taking too much time to fill up then it could be due to clogged pipes.

In extreme cases, you will have to replace the sections of the pipe or normally you can dissolve the minerals that are gumming up the works inside your pipes.

If you find that the clog is situated at the endpoint then you can soak it in vinegar for some time.

With that being said, if you are not sure how to do it, it is best that you contact a professional plumber and let them inspect your pipe.

Check Your Valve

Check Your Valve

The flow of water is controlled by a valve which is located near the water meter. Check whether the valve is completely open or not.

During maintenance or repairs, the valve might get turned without you being aware.

If the valve is only partially turned and not completely open, it reduces the flow of water and thus you will experience poor water pressure while the machine is filling up.

So has a plumber been working on your water system recently? Maybe the low pressure coincides with the work the plumber was doing.

It is possible that the plumber has used the valve to finish the work and then partially opened it.

Check that the valve is completely open or not — test the water pressure to see if there is any difference.

Deregulate

Deregulate

Most of the homes that are using public water have a regulator that is located either at the entrance of the service line or at the meter.

If the regulator is bad or worn-out it gradually drops the pressure and causes a slow flow of water.

The best solution is to adjust or replace the regulator — better hire a plumber to get the job done for you. As some jobs are better left to the pros.

Watch Out for Leaks

Watch Out for Leaks

Damaged or cracked pipes might result in water leaks that might siphon off your water and leave you with just a trickle of it.

To figure out if your main pipe has any sort of leakage make sure to turn off all the taps and faucets, then turn off the water valve and read the number that appears on the meter.

After some hours cross-check the reading, under normal cases it should be the same number you read but if you have leaks then the number will be increased.

Solution? Call some professionals.

Water Supplier

Water Supplier

If you find that your neighbours are having the same problem then low water pressure is not connected to your house.

Contact the water supplier and make them aware of the problem, if they are working on a problem then you will have to sit tight for a bit.

On the other hand, if they are denying or refusing the problem then you will have to mobilize and sign a petition from your neighbours.

Pipe Size

Pipe Size

If your pipe size is small then it might cause problems as it is not able to meet your water needs. A plumber might be able to provide a better specification based on your usage of water so make sure to check that out.

Corroded Pipes

Corroded Pipes

If your steel pipes are corroded from the inside then it might be the culprit for the low water pressure. How may you ask?

The buildup of corrosion over time gradually closes off the pipe and the flow of water experiences restriction.

Unfortunately, the solution is to re-pipe the system with copper pipes or PEX tubing which is trending these days both in terms of cost and ease for installation.

Water is Being Used Somewhere Else

This is the most common issue for slower water pressure when the water is running somewhere else you will notice a difference in the water pressure.

So if you are using the washing machine then make sure that you are not using water somewhere else and all the faucets and taps are turned off.

Water Pressure Booster

Water Pressure Booster

Turns out that the problem is not you but it’s the position of the water supply. Let us explain…

Gravity and distance are the two factors that impact water pressure negatively. So if your water is forced to travel an uphill path or a really huge distance from the municipal water supply then that could result in low water pressure.

So as far as the solution is concerned, you can use a water pressure booster that will — as the name suggests will increase the pressure of your water.

However, having said that, they are kinda costly and can shell out a ton of money from your pocket. Also, you will need a professional to fix it.

Cessation

That’s it, these were some potential causes and solutions for dealing with slow water pressure in your washing machine. We hope that it helps, dealing with low water pressure is annoying and can ruin your time as well as showers.

You might need a water pressure booster to run your modern washing machine if all the possible solutions fail.

In rare cases, you might have to change your washing machine, let’s hope that’s not the case especially if you have recently purchased it.

With that being said, if you have any sorts of doubts or comments don’t be hesitant to ask them in the comment section below we will gladly help you out.
