You need few things that will make cleaning the machine easier and better. So here’s what you need to gather before you start.
- White Vinegar
- Damp cloth
- Baking soda
- Hydrogen Peroxide (Specifically for molds)
- Dish soap
- Toothbrush (For tiny areas)
How will you Clean a Washing Machine?
So to clean your washing machine, we are going to use vinegar and baking soda.
Both of these are readily available kitchen ingredients with also being exceptional cleaning agents.
When mixed together, white vinegar and baking soda can be highly effective to get rid of bad odors and mould lurking inside or around the washer.
This is because of their chemical properties. Vinegar is an acid, and baking soda as a base creates salty water and carbon dioxide gas. This reaction quickly gets rid of foul odor and gives your washer a clean look.
Cleaning the Wash Tub
So first of all, make sure the drum of your washing machine is empty. Next, press the clean cycle or tub clean option on your washer.
Not all machines will have this choice. So what you can do is, press the hottest and largest load setting.
The next step is to add approximately 2 cups of white vinegar to the detergent tray. This will help you get rid of odor-causing bacteria and deposits.
Run the washing cycle entirely, including the rising function.
Once done with this, it’s hot wash time. Just repeat.
So fill the washer with hot water and a clean cycle or tub clean setting; if not, you know what you have to do.
Now, add two cups of baking soda or bleach to the detergent tray. This will remove the stains and germs from the washtub. Run the machine as we did earlier.
Almost all the dirt must have been cleaned by now, but if you find your washer tub sticky, or slimy run the machine with plain water, and your tub is good for the next month.
Cleaning the detergent Tray
It holds on to detergent all of the time, and it is obvious that the scum can quickly get accumulated over there.
And hence it is necessary, to clean that too.
So first of all, remove the bleach dispenser, or fabric softener dispenser, and other removable parts of the detergent tray.
In a bucket full of warm water, add few drops of dish soap and put all of the detergent tray parts in the bucket.
Soak them for few minutes, and then clean them using a damp cloth or a rag. Dry them and put them back in their place.
Yes, it’s just that easy.
Cleaning the Door Seal and Exterior Portion
Pull away the rubber seal, and check if soap remains are accumulated, or molds are formed around it.
Well, it would probably be, and hence you know it has to be cleaned.
This is way more simple. You just need to spritz white vinegar on the microfiber cloth and rub over the exterior portion and door seal.
Also, don’t miss out on knobs and control panels because we know you want to make it look like you did work hard.
Use a toothbrush for cleaning the tiny seals as well. Simply sprinkle white vinegar on the toothbrush to clean the tiny parts, and you are good to go.
So that’s how you can clean your washing machine. It is easy, simple, and mostly hassle-free.
If you have a front load washing machine:
- Always know that cleaning should be more emphasized on the gasket or rubber seal around the door.
- If you have molds, spritzed distilled white vinegar on them, and let it sit for a minute before you wipe it off with a cloth.
- If the molds are still not gone, you can use a diluted bleach solution for the same.
If you have a top-loading washing machine:
- Pause the machine during the first water clean-up and let the water rest for a while.
- Add vinegar to the tub, and let the water rest for an hour or so as the vinegar will soak.
- Make sure you use a hard toothbrush to reach out the tiny toothbrush.
So depending on the type of washing machine you own, make sure you use these tips to clean it.
While we don’t always want to spend hours cleaning it all this way, what we can do is change the small habits we have developed.
As you already know, not cleaning a washing machine will lower down its life expectancy, so here’s how you can be extra careful with using it on a regular basis.
Tips for maintaining washing machine on a regular basis:
Cleaning the washing machine is essential, but so is using it appropriately.
And so here we are o help you know what tiny changes and habits you can develop while doing your laundry.
Don’t let the clothes rest in
Yes, you read that right. You might get caught up with the work and forget to take them out.
But this in the future can lead to rusting of the washer. This affects the overall cleaning, and we know it’s the last thing you want.
So always take out the clothes from the washer as soon as washed.
Keep a check on hoses.
Always make sure there are no leaks, cracks, or fraying around the end of the hoses. If it is make sure to replace them.
Keep the washing machine at a distance.
The distance of the washing machine from the wall matters the most. Keep your washing machine at least 4 inches away from the wall.
This will prevent hoses from kinking and spoiling.
Keep the lid open
Front-load or top-load, no matter what type of machine you own, this one is essential. Leave the washer door open at least for 10-15 minutes after taking out the laundry.
This will dry up the drums and prevent lousy odor inside them.
Wipe it out
We are busy but taking care of our technology is equally important. So, whenever possible during the day, wipe out the rubber seal and drum.
Simply using a damp cloth is enough, as you would be using the vinegar at least once a month.
Avoid extra detergent than necessary.
Sometimes clothes can get really stinky and dirty. And this will make you want to add a lot and a lot of detergents to clean them up.
But wait, it will only harm your machine. It can get soapy inside and will cause more washing t your clothes, as well as the machine.
So instead of doing any good, this will simply do more harm to your washing machine.
A front-load or top load washing machine requires regular cleaning. We don’t recommend regular cleaning like this. Once a month is always more than enough.
And so is doing the right way. You won’t always need to invest in expensive machine cleaning liquids and detergent. These easily available kitchen ingredients are simply perfect for all types of cleaning.
However, we also want our reader to avoid over-loading as well as over-cleaning of the washing machine. Doing either of these is equally harmful.
So if you wish to avoid any issues in the future, use a good detergent that is soft on your clothes and gourd to your machine as well.
Hope this helped, and let us know how these tips made cleaning easier.
