While there are various technical factors to consider before choosing an inverter for your house, not all of us may understand what goes into choosing the best inverter as per your household requirements.

Power Requirement

The power requirement completely depends upon the number of appliances you may want to run using the inverter. For this, you need to understand the wattage of various commonly used appliances in your house and choose the power requirement accordingly.

You will have to decide the number of appliances you will run when there is no power in your house and accordingly calculate the power consumption and requirement based on this.

The most commonly used appliances and their wattage are as follows:

  • LED Bulb: 7-10 watts
  • CFL Bulb: 25 watts
  • Tube Light: 50 watts
  • Fan: 80 watts
  • TV: 120 watts
  • AC: 250-300 watts

These are the most commonly used appliances. For example, if you want to run these appliances for say around 4-5 hours, then the power requirement can be calculated as follows:

 

  • Appliances: 1 LED Bulb + 1 Tubelight + 2 Fans + 1 TV
  • Power requirement: 1*7(W) + 1*50(W) + 2* 80(W) + 1*120(W) = 337 Watts

 

If this is your general power requirement, then an inverter of capacity 350-400 watts should easily suffice. Ideally, the usage should preferably be kept to a minimum while there is no power.

 

Inverter Capacity/ VA rating

The VA rating of an inverter stands for the volt-ampere rating. This is the actual voltage and ampere of current that is supplied by the inverter to your electric device. Ideally, it is expected that the inverter provides 100% efficiency, meaning it supplies the same amount of electricity that is required by the appliance.

However, providing the expected ideal value is never possible and hence, inverters are known to provide a power supply with an efficiency of 60% to 80%. The average considered for calculations is 70% (0.7)

The efficiency is known to be the power factor whereas the VA rating is calculated using the same efficiency.

 

The formula for calculating the VA rating is as follows:

VA rating (power supplied by the inverter) = Power requirement (power consumption by the appliance in watts) / power factor (efficiency) 

 

For ease of understanding, say the total requirement as per the appliances we run is 337 watts (considering the above example)

 

Therefore, 337/0.7 = 481 VA

Battery Size

You need to choose an appropriate size and capacity of the battery as per your usage and inverter model that you choose. If you go for incompatible battery size, you may not get the expected results or efficiency.

The capacity of the battery is generally measured in Ampere-Hour (Ah). This unit denotes the amount of power it can provide for a particular period.

For example, if a battery mentions of having size 1000Ah, then it can provide 1000 Amperes of current in an hour.

Now, the size of the battery required also depends upon the inverter’s VA ratings.

Let us consider the above example again:

If the inverter has VA ratings as 481 and you want to use it for 5 hours, then the required battery size would be 481*5 = 2405Ah.

The Ah value helps in determining the energy that a battery can store. Basic batteries for inverters have an input energy of 12 Volts. Therefore, the Ah value can be calculated as follows:

2405/12 = 200Ah.

There are various battery sizes and capacities available in the market starting right from the range of 100 Ah to 250 Ah and so on. Therefore, as per the current calculations that we have shown you, a battery size of 250Ah would be the perfect fit for you.

 

Battery Recharge Time

Inverter batteries use a Constant Current Constant Voltage Charge Method (CCCV method). Ideally, the time is taken for inverter batteries to get fully charged in 9-10 hours. But just as in the case of efficiency, the battery charging time may also differ depending upon the power supply losses while charging, which happens when electricity is supplied to any appliance in ideal cases.

The battery charging time will also depend upon the ampere-hour rating of the battery denoted as Ah.

Ideally, a 120 Ah battery should be taking anywhere between 9-10 hours to get charged but due to the supply losses incurred, it can take around 12-16 hours to get charged. However, the charging time can be reduced with high charge currents and multistage charge methods.

Ideally, an inverter is known for storing DC and converting it back into AC when the actual current supply switches off. This can be used to power almost anything at your house or commercial space depending upon the capacity of the inverter and the battery.

The types of appliances that you can run using the inverter depend upon the type of inverter as well. Generally, inverters are known to be of two types being the modified sine wave and the pure sine wave inverter.
